If below is the given figure, then

If x is the side of a square, then, the area of a square is x^{2}

In figure A, area of each square is 1. In this 4 squares are not shaded. So removing them,

the area of the shaded part for figure A will be x^2\ -\ \left(\ 1+1+1+1\right)\ = x^{2}-4.

In figure B, the area of each small square is equal to 2. There are 4 shaded small squares.

There are two large shaded squares, the area of each square is x^{2}

and so the area of the shaded part for figure B will be x^2\ +\ x^2\ +\ 2\ +\ 2\ +\ 2\ +\ 2\ =\ 2x^2+\ 8
