STEP 2: Recall what are the rules of exponents

STEP 3: Evaluate

27^{\frac{2}{3}}

This can be written as

(27^\frac{1}{3})^{2}

Using our formula for the fractional exponent  a^\frac{x}{y} = [math]\sqrt[y]{a^{x}}[/math]

(27^\frac{1}{3})^{2}

= [math]\sqrt[3]{(27)^{2}}[/math]

= [math]\sqrt[3]{(3^{3})^{2}}[/math]

= (3)^{2} = 9
