Solar panels generate what is called Direct Current (or DC). Power supply at home is Alternating Current (or AC). So, using solar power meant one or more of the following:

  1. Convert the DC current to AC current.
  2. Use DC appliances. IIT Madras has been running a project in Rajasthan where appliances at home (e.g. fans, lights, etc) run on DC instead of AC

The other problem was storage (in a battery) for later use.

These days, solar power generation companies convert DC to AC and supply the power to the power grid directly.

In some cases (e.g. solar streetlights), the solar power is stored in batteries and used at night.
