#### How do you know when to switch the symbol when you're doing the substitution method with inequalities? Do you switch it when the number with the variable is a negative when you're dividing, or just either side with the negative?

I'm frustrated since someone told me you only switch it when the variables are negative, and some of the equations that I'm solving are sometimes wrong just because of the symbol is not switched.

It would be good if you can actually take a picture of the problem and steps you are talking about.

The substitution method is used when you are solving a system of equations. Do you have a system of inequalities or just one inequality?

In any case, you flip the inequality sign when you divide both sides by a negative number (this is regardless of whether the coefficient of the variable is negative or not).

I.e. if x < 2 => -x > -2

I.e. if -x < 2 => x > -2
