Some techniques on how to Answer essay type of questions in ISC literature examinations:

1. Initially write some crucial points about the author or poet. In case the poem is autobiographical,

for example: Phenomenal Woman, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, you may write about their life. This should be done in 1 paragraphs.

2. Second come up with the main idea/theme of the poem,  just a brief introduction. The introduction should attract the reader’s attention and show the focus of your essay. If there is a main character, introduce them. Give some background. This should be done in 1-2 paragraphs.

3. Then move on to the body of the essay. For Poetry use this simple acronym- QSA- Quote, Summarize, Analyze. This may take up as many paragraphs, depends on the length of the poem/story. Remember, keep the summary part less, analyze more. Don't beat about the bush, analyze to the point. Keep in mind the question, for eg. If the question is about imagery, remember to analyze the imagery of each stanza of the poem.

4. In next part of your answer, write about the literary device, or the overall critical analysis. For eg, In the poem enterprise this is where you should write that the poem is an allegory, an extended metaphor, and explain it too! Also mention how it is a verbal antithesis, comment on the epigramatical ending.

5. Synthesize your argument in the conclusion. The concluding stanza will change according to the question, you'll have to figure out that bit on yourself.

Remember to quote. Quotes are extremely Important. In poetry you will not have any problem in quoting. As for stories/Drama, try to include atleast 7-8 quotes.
