I am assuming you are talking about less than and greater than symbols.

The symbols are \gt and <. To understand how these work, you need to understand how they are read.

  1. The reading happens from left to right. Which means, you always say 2 is less than 1 or 100 is greater than 50.
  2. Now, if we come to symbols, the number that is indicated by combining the lines in the symbol is lesser, and the symbol indicated at the open lines end is greater.

For example, take 100 \gt 99 . Here in the symbol, the opening end of the symbol is the greater number than the closing end. So 100 is greater than 99. Similarly with less than.
