The circles (actually the term used is dots) are used to indicate whether the number circled is included in the inequality or not.


For example, if you are plotting x \geq 2 , you would highlight the portion of the number line that lies to the right of the number 2, but you would circle with a filled circle. This shows that x = 2 is part of the solution.

If you are plotting x \gt 2 , you would highlight the portion of the number line that lies to the right of the number 2, but you would use an empty circle to highlight the number 2. This shows that x = 2 is NOT part of the solution.
