Do it step by step.

- Identify the quantities that the problem is asking you to find. These are your unknowns and they are your variables. If there are two quantities you are being asked to find then you would have two variables, x and y. If there is only one quantity to be found then there is only one variable x.
- Identify the information given to you (these will yield the key numbers to write your equation)
- Identify the relationship between your unknown quantities and the known information (those will be your equations).

Let's apply this strategy to the Harry and Heinrick problem:

The quantities you are being asked to find:

- After how many hours will the two ponds have the same number of lily pads
- What is the number of lily pads at this point of time?

Therefore, the two unknowns are the number of hours passed after the hippos started eating the lily pads (let's call it X) and the number of lily pads in the pond after x hours.

What is the relationship between X and y?

y = (starting number of lily pads) - (number of lily pads eaten every hour) x X
