Is momentum a vector?

If say you have two bodies with masses 30 kg and 80 kg moving perpendicularly towards a point of collision with the same velocity, what would be the final momentum, direction and velocity?

Vivekanand Vellanki

Momentum is a vector, its direction is the same as direction of the velocity of the object.

The second part of the question is incomplete. You have to apply conservation of momentum so solve such questions.

The missing piece of information includes the following:

  • What are the speeds of the two masses? The directions are given, but not the speeds
  • What happens after the collision? Do the two objects become one? or do they remain two? If they remain two, in which directions do they fly off?
