a. The median remains the same because removing an extreme value from a data set tends not to have much effect or no effect on the median. In this case, there may be several families with 2 children.


b. The mean changes because the mean uses all values in its calculation, so removing one of the values usually affects the mean. Since 12 is the greatest value in the set, the mean of the data set should decrease.
