Given that

Mass of the body m_1 = 10 kg

Mass of the body m_2 = 20 kg

Applied horizontal force F = 600 N  

(i) if force F is applied to A

Total mass of the system M = 10 + 20 = 30 kg

Acceleration of the system a = \frac{F}{m} = \frac{600}{30} = 20 m/s^2

The equation of the motion F - T = m_1a

T = F - m_1a

T = 600 - (10)(20)

T = 400 N

Hence,  tension in the string   T = 400 N .......................(1)

(ii) if force F is applied to B

The equation of the motion F - T = m_2a

T = F - m_2 a

T = 600 - 20*(20) = 600 - 400

T = 200 N

Hence,  tension in the string T = 200 N .......................(2)

From equation (1) and (2)

In both situations, the tension is different. It is determined by the force and mass.
