In the formal writing system of Ancient Egypt, cartouches were used. A Cartouche is basically a symbol. It basically indicates whatever text enclosed in inside of this is a royal name.

The term though, cartouche is a French term. This was was first applied by French soldiers because they saw this symbol being frequently repeated on pharaonic ruins they encountered and they fancied that the symbol they saw resembled a muzzle-loading firearm's paper powder cartridge.
