The name "Rotten Tomatoes" derives from the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes when disapproving of a poor stage performance. In February 2016, Rotten Tomatoes and its parent site Flixster were sold to Comcast's Fandango.


Rotten tomatoes is an american leading online aggregator of movie and TV shows reviews from critics, they provide fans with a comprehensive guide to what's fresh and what's rotten. Tomatometer score are the world’s most trusted recommendation resources for quality entertainment.

  • In Tomatometer a red tomato is displayed to indicate its Fresh status. When at least 60% of reviews for a movie or TV show are positive.
  • A green splat is displayed to indicate its Rotten status. When less than 60% of reviews for a movie or TV show are positive.
  • Certified Fresh status is a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows.

The Audience Score, denoted by a popcorn bucket, is the percentage of all users who have rated the movie or TV Show positively.
