What are the factors in which fiction is different from fact?

Fiction is something that need not happen - often, it is associated with something that may happen in the future. However, it is also about the past - with little or no relationship to what actually happened in the past.
Fact is about what is true - something that really happened; or is known to occur in the future.
In some cases, it is easy to identify fiction. For e.g. when plants start talking to English - this is fiction.
However, a lot of times, it is hard to distinguish fact from fiction. In today's age where fake news is prevalent, it is becoming difficult for people to separate fact from fiction.
In fact, this has been an interesting area of research for researchers.
