I am not sure what school options you have and what courses do the schools offer but I can tell what you need to learn to become a good animator which helps you to choose something useful.

  1. You should be good with things around you. Absolutely good. Many times, I love animated movies than films with real persons in it. You know why? Because animated characters can sometimes express their emotions way better than normal actors. If you want to become an animator, you should be a keen observer by nature. Starting from how things move, how humans express, how they act to what a small motion could cause a big difference in a given scenario you should notice everything and grasp.
  2. Aptitude of making your own. You must be a creator. Learn the thought process and be expressive in your mind. Tweak things so that a drawing would make an impact on the audience. Try something new, even if it means failing.
  3. Technical Stuff. These are the tools you need. Starting from drawing to computer knowledge, these things make your job easier. Actually, the above points you should learn on your own many times, but when it comes to technical things, you can take a course at your school. Learn how to draw. Know about the tools that exist in the animation world. Understand them and study how to use these things better.
  4. Always have a theme in mind. This is very crucial. Just because you can create that doesn't mean you should. When I create something, even its a simple paragraph, if somebody points out a mistake then I take a huge step back to introspect myself and try to understand where I went wrong. So don't just put it there everything you got which doesn't make any sense. Especially for an art, it is very important to have a backbone theme - what you want to say; and a method of saying it. You would become a good animator if you imbibe this into your thought process.
  5. Build projects. Volunteer for Open Source. Find animating groups, forums online. Participate. Start building a project. Publish. Or may be start a YouTube channel of your own. Keep an inventory of everything you do. It will definitely help you in future.

Lastly, I want to cite one of my favourite animated films. Check it out if you haven't seen already -

Apart from the impeccable style and detail, the underlying theme is captivating and deep.

I hope you would become a great animator somebody and the world will appreciate your work.
