A unit vector is a vector of length 1 in a given direction. That's all there is to it.


Why is it important? It is important for the same reason that the number 1 is important on the number line. All numbers on the number line can be represented as multiples of 1.


Similarly, all vectors in the same direction can be represented as multiples of the unit vector in that direction
