The main technology used in home remote controls is infrared (IR) light. The signal between a remote control handset and the device it controls consists of pulses of infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, but can be seen through a digital camera, video camera or a phone camera. The IR is generated by a simple IR LED. You push in 10 milliamps and it puts out IR light. The circuitry sends pulses of electricity which are like a morse code, encoding the commands.

As you go along the electromagnetic spectrum, wavelength decreases, and energy increases. Radio waves have the longest wavelength, and the lowest energy, while gamma rays have the shortest wavelength and the highest energy. The types of radiation used in this project are infrared radiation and visible light.
