Napoleon Bonaparte was a great military general and the first emperor of France. He is considered one of the greatest military strategist.

After the French Revolution, France was ruled by a group of 5 people called the Directory. In a coup in 1799, Napoleon overthrew the Director and declared himself the emperor of France.

In various wars, he fought and defeated various neighbouring kingdoms. He however faced defeat at the hands of the Russians in 1812. He was forced to go into exile in 1814.

He returned a year later and declared himself emperor again. His forces were defeated by the British forces at the Battle of Waterloo. After this, Napoleon was exiled for the 2nd time to St. Helena, an island in the South Atlantic. He died at the age of 51 in St. Helena.
