Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed people?

I've noticed how many right-handed or left-handed people there are, and for some reason there seem to be more right-handed people than left-handed people. Why is there such a thing as right or left-handedness, and why are there more right-handed people?

I think it is hereditary or something you are born with. I read some article that in Asia it is customary for kids to learn to write with their right hand. Here is what Sam has to say about this
