Dog psychology - Why do dogs circle around the place they want to sit ?

Why do dogs do the many other wierd things they do ? Like they love playing catch, like to chase their own talis, tilt their heads for no reason at all, sniff their own butts, dig and so on. The one reason why they circle around the place is perhaps to check if it is comfortable or not, or maybe they want to establish their territory,
