Differentiation is the process of finding a rate of change of some phenomenon.

E.g. If you are calculating the speed of an object you are differentiating its position with respect to time.

What differentiation allows you to do find the rate of change of phenomenon that does not have a constant rate. E.g. finding the instantaneous speed at which your car is moving. Instantaneous speed is found by considering smaller and smaller time units over which you will calculate the rate. Each of these time units will be around the time at which you want to calculate the instantaneous speed. For example, if you want to calculate the instantaneous speed at t = 10s, then you will calculate the distance the car travels from t = 9.9s to t = 10.1s and then divide that by 0.2s to get the instantaneous speed at t = 10s. You can make this interval smaller and smaller to get a better and better answer.
